I'm NOT Feeling the Love...

Why, you may ask?

I finished my Sirdar Yo-Yo Pullover and I really, really, I mean really, don't care for it at all. As a matter of fact, I would go so far as to say that I really, really and I mean really hate it.

It would be okay if I had made it smaller. It would be okay if it weren't so darned pink. It would be okay if I started to think as the knitter I know I am capable of being, as opposed to a woman who has a problem knowing what the hell size she really is.

It would still just be okay, though. It isn't the sort of pattern I would have normally even considered for myself. My husband even said several times that it wasn't my style. So, why did I go ahead and make the decision to make this garment? Well, I got caught in the moment of, gee, how can you make a sweater out of one giant 400g ball of yarn that self-patterns?

Or, in more believable terms, I was a dork.

So, here is the finished disaster...

I'm so embarrassed.

I hang my head in shame.

It is times like these that I swear I will only knit socks and shawls for the rest of my life.

Now I'm going to recuperate.

Keep on knitting...

Don't feel too down, Michelle. No, it doesn't really fit, and I can see that you don't feel comfortable in it. But you made a really nice garment, and that is something to be proud of. Giving away your knitting is a very personal choice, so I won't tell you to do that, but maybe you can take comfort in the fact that there are lots of women out there who would look gorgeous and feel like a million bucks in it, and YOU MADE IT.

I'm just going to "ditto" Jess. The sweater looks great and very well knit, it just doesn't fit you right. {{{hug}}}

you're right, it doesn't fit. are you really gonna give it away? you know, the frog stitch is pretty popular right now. and btw, did you know that to ship a package of 6 oz or less from the us or canada is cheaper by airmail than by ground? go figure. your package is on its way!

I think your sweater turned out very well. The colors are lovely. You even matched the color gradations on the sleeves! It is perhaps a little big, but looks oh so comfy. I tend to keep my mistakes like that for wearing around the house. When I've put so much time into something, even if it doesn't live up to my expectations, I have a hard time parting with it.

PS...Love, love, love the Grommit slides!

It could make a great gift for someone larger than you.

Don't be so hard on yourself. It was a "Learning Project."

The colors in it really are pretty.

There's no need to hide your head in shame, my dear! I've done the exact same thing...been drawn to a design and yarn that isn't my style, but I can't resist the opportunity to knit. I'm sure we've all done it. You can now say that you knit an entire sweater from one ball of yarn, and got to work with an interesting variegation. Find someone who will love the sweater to pieces, and pass it along! Nothing knitted is ever a waste!

You did a wonderful job with the striping yarn. I often get sucked into a pattern that I really shouldn't wear. I bought yarn for one this summer and suddenly one afternoon realized that I never look good in peasant-blouse styles, fortunately before I started to knit. And yesterday I frogged the back of a sweater after realizing that while I was getting the right gauge, I was definitely making it a size too small. Oh right, I said, I am supposed to figure on my real, current size ;> So I am about to start that one again!

Rats. Don't you just hate it when that happens?

You could frog it and make pretty scarves for charity.

Take heart in knowing that you are not the first to have a less-lovely-than-you-hoped, and you certainly won't be the last. I have a completely finished cardigan that needs to go the the dung heap.....er....be made into scarves.

Did I mention how much I love your lacey scalloped socks?

awww..i don't know how many times that has happened to me. i have an aran knit pullover sitting in the basement that was made from 50% cotton/ 50% wool that is way too heavy because of the cables. maybe i should rip it out and make it into the cardigan it wants to be.

awwwwww michelle..I'm sorry you're down about your sweater..but it seems to me your wonderful husband took you shopping to Paris, Ontario for yarn right after you had been feeling really sick for quite a while..they were closing and you just snapped that up..without really having the chance to look around. You had to try knitting the sweater..because you bought it. No sense leaving it to sit there. Why don't you banish it for a while, rip it out and pare down the size and I bet it will really look good on you :) or...make a couple of little sweaters for your little girl. I bet she'd look sweet in something made from that yarn.

here's something to cheer you up! did you know there's a yahoo group for fans of diana gabaldon, and that she just posted another excerpt from a breath of snow and ashes on it? i'll give you the addy if you want. sept 27th just isn't close enough for me! (and i'll read the book in 2 days, i'm worse about this than harry potter!)

I think you did a beautiful job on the sweater! But there is nothing wrong with giving it away as a gift. I have made 2 sweaters that were too big on me, gave them away & they love the fact that I gave them a hand knitted sweater that was made by moi & fits them. ;-)

Being that I also make clothing not knitting but costumes etc trust me I know the feeling.

God did not grace us all with perfect hourglass figures. I for one balooned after having my first child. I will prob never be any "regular" size again. No one is perfect and the images we see on tv and in magazines are FAKE and airbrushed.

The sweater although not fitting you well looks nice. The craftmanship is wondeful. You did a wonderful job it's just not the cut for you. Without trying on an outfit before buying it how would we tell if it will look nice or not. Truly that's very hard to do and I'd wager most people wouldn't do this or regretted if they ever did.

So don't beat yourself up just because it didn't fit you perfectly. You did a beautiful job and your knitting skills are superb!

Keep your head up :)

Never mind - it was a work of art anyway! I've just discovered Sirdar Yo-yo here in England and am knitting the nice cardigan with the frilly edge in Nocturne, the black, grey and denim colour. However, I'm a bit disappointed because instead of the colour gradually changing, it's coming out with a sort of "tide mark" effect as the colour doesn't always graduate, but just changes quite suddenly, making a line. I'm going to write (or email) Sirdar to tell them I'm not happy. At least your sweater had the nice colour graduations! By the time you read this you will have done one of three things: either ripped out your knitting and started something else with the yarn, hidden the sweater in the back of a cupboard, or decided to bite the bullet and wear it! Good luck to you, whichever it was!
