Copyright/Designer Angst...

I should have addressed and followed up on this topic sooner, but as always, life has a way of hogging up all your time. wink I will say that my daughter now goes to the potty on her own! This is a terrific breakthrough. Now, if she could just remember to pull down her pants before she sits down. Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Anyway, as I was saying...

I do not know who the blogger or designer are in this debate. But, if you look here and read through the entire thread, you will see how ridiculous the entire matter is...and how vindictive.

I will end this by saying leave the copyright issues up to the lawyers...period. I know what I need to know. Many of you in your comments to me are correct in saying that the copyright is for the written word, not the finished product. However, what happens if a designer states in her pattern that she doesn't want anyone that makes her project to take photos of it? Can this be legal? I sometimes feel that there are those that make up the copyright law as they go along. Me? I've had it with the entire issue.

Well, the rest of my post, which Blogger ate, was supposed to go here...it will now have to wait until later tonight or tomorrow.

It is such a hard subject, because we knitters use each other as helpers and as idea givers and when we get a designer who is (apparently) a complete bi*** the word will get spread. However, I'm kind of glad that the name wasn't mentioned (and that you don't know) because I would hate for you (or anyone else) to get into trouble by posting that.

I don't think a designer can tell someone to NOT take a picture of something they own and made. There is probably a clause in the copyright law that states that a designer doesn't have the right to the finished product, and only the pattern. Now if we started posting the patterns online that'd be different, because even though we own the patterns and can use them at our leizure we can't copy them or give them away ... Just like a novel or whatever.

Funny that you address potty training and this silly subject of copyright infringement over photos in the same post! All I have to say is YEAH for your little girl and BOO to the silly designer.

As you say the whole thing is rediculous, as a designer ( very small time) I would be delighted if someone posted a picture of something I had designed - whether they credited me or not. If you think that is silly, when I was in London last year I was asked to stop taking photos of wool on the shelves in a major store as " the manufacturer's don't like it" ????

Thanks for the link to the whole, torrid thread. I hadn't read the actual comments, just heard about it on various blogs.

Loved the cat bowling from yesterday!

Shoot! I had meant to comment about your daughter's potty training success! Yay for her! Any tips for me, a mother of a two year old girl who wants to sit on the potty but who won't sit there long enough to do anything?! *lol*
