A Little Bit of Knitting History...

or, I really do love my mother-in-law!

Warning: This is a photo heavy post. Click on photo for larger view.

Last summer, August to be precise, my mother-in-law gave me her old knitting patterns. Some mags, but mostly old leaflets. A lot of the patterns are for socks [cue the twilight zone theme] with really different techniques for working the heel.

This is just a very small sampling of what I found interesting. I hope you enjoy the walk through knitting history.

Above from left to right: 1] Hand Knit Socks by Beehive Series No. 37, 25 cents; The Aladdin Heel 2] Photo description of Aladdin Heel 3] The Innovation Heel from Men's Socks by Beehive Series No. 62, 35 cents

Above from left to right: 1] Red Cross Knitting Instructions for War Work. Dated November, 1940. 2] Gotta love instructions to knit Lady's Knickers! I don't know whether to laugh or scratch.

Above: Last but not least, Needle and Yarn, 1964, Volume 1 Number 4 @ 60 cents

Ahhhh, memories.

Keep On Knitting...

I have a lot of the old(er) Patons/Beehive booklets but I'm getting a little green-eyed about the VK's - love 'em!!

do you realize, of all those VK mags, only 2 weren't older than me? those are possibly collectible as antique mags, let alone as knitting material

when my MIL died I inherrited all of her patterns, and a very eary copy of Woman's Weekly! The patterns are fantastic...who knits pilches nowadays? After receiving them I vowed to bring tank tops with matching socks back into fashion!

I've got a little collection of the old patton's leaflettes and they are so interesting to flip through, I love the kitchy matching son/father mother/daughter items...hilariously endearing. So, are you planning on trying any?

I've got some of those sock books! They are truly awqesome! I do find, however, that men must have had the skinniest legs at that time, because I usually have to add a few stitches for my legs, and even for the hub's!

I've got a couple of those old Vogue Knitting mags - that FI flower looking sweater looks cute.
It's so much fun looking at the old fashions.

Those old Vogue mags look so fun. I don't really like the current issues. Gosh I wish I had a MIL who knit in the 60s.
