Red-Headed Sparrow?

This is the bird that has sparrow markings, is the size of a sparrow, but is red on its head and breast...

This is one of my regulars at the birdfeeder...

I'm no bird expert but my handy-dandy "Audubon Society Pocket Guide" says what you have there is a male House Finch. The female is "similar but lacks red, and has uniform brown head".

Thanks for looking it up for me, Marlene! It's nice to know what different species of birds are flying about.

Thanks for your comment on my blog! Let us know what you order from NuMei.

That is a very beautiful bird! We could never have a bird feeder, just knowing that somehow the cats would find their way to it. They get enough as it is without a feeder. :(

Hey ya'll. I also installed a bird feeder with six feeding stations. No sooner did I install it when the Pigions and larger birds Started feeding every day. I bought a length of 1" Screen and rolled it to fit around the bird feeder. It tapers at the top so I can life it off to fill the feeder. The 1" holes are too small for any size birds so I just cut out a few holes to make them Larger. Now the small birds feed every day and the Pigigons and larger birds cannot get to the feed. I can highly recommend it.
